fifty square feet

Being sick sucks. I worked from home today. As such, I never left my apartment, which is all of 50 square feet. Ok… it’s bigger than that, but it still sucks that I never left. Oh well. I’ll go to work tomorrow, thoroughly drugged up (yay Tylenol), and hopefully not piss everyone off with constant nose blowing.

After an amazing time last weekend, and a really great week at work, I’m now sitting in my apartment constantly blowing my nose. Cold, flu, I have no idea. All I know is that I feel crappy.

Last weekend was unbelievable. Case Race champion for the second year in a row, not to mention first co-ed team to ever win, thanks in large part to my partner. Who knew that Loree could drink that much? Not I. I don’t remember much about that night, but I do remember having an excellent time.

Halloween party, awesome. Best costumes we’ve ever had. Keg was delicious. Doug’s games were kinda lame, but they were at least a nice change from the usual and I applaud him for taking a chance. I also hope he tries something like that again. Just because it didn’t work once doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea. Jillians afterwards was amazingly fun. “Last call! Oh wait! Daylight savings! You get another hour!” Best thing I had ever heard.

I miss everyone in Cleveland. Chicago is awesome and all, but I truly miss my friends greatly. I know I just need to give myself more time to meet people here, but that doesn’t stop me from trying to think of the next time I can make it to Cleveland.

Avanade has put my on a project! Horay! I now get to go in to work and have stuff to do other than simply studying for certification exams all day. If I wanted to study more, I would have gone to grad school! But now I’m on a project, and it’s truly a great project with such huge potential for me to prove myself. Unfortunately, I know so much is going to happen tomorrow with the project and I just can’t decide if I can make it in to work feeling as crappy as I do. Right now I’m thinking I’ll work from home (my laptop has my development environment on it, anyway), but I’ll see how I feel tomorrow morning.

I haven’ t posted in awhile, and I just wanted to say hello. A lot has been happening to me lately in Chicago and I’ve been real busy. Hopefully I’ll get a full post in soon. Yay Chicago!

my job rocks

1) I’m in Chicago. This city is so very cool. I love going downtown every day for work, spending my day in this bustling city, and then heading home to an apartment. It will be even better after October 1st, once I move into my own place instead of crashing at my sisters. At that point, I will finally have my own place, my own career, and my own brand new life in Chicago.

2) The people are awesome. Absolutely everyone I’ve met thus far in my 3 days of work have been people with similar interests to my own. Everyone that I’ve met I could see actually becoming friends with, and not just “office friends.” I went out to happy hour after work at a bar near work, and there were 20-30 people there from work (most of whom I hadn’t met, but now I have) just drinking and having a great time with each other. I felt like I fit right in.

3) The benefits. I love the idea of having my own health insurance and retirement plan. I’m sure that the reason I feel this way is because I’ve always been under the medical plan of my father and by having these plans makes me feel like an actual adult. The feeling of growing up and moving on is amazing.

4) “Extended Benefits.” While it may sound something like friends with benefits, I assure you, they are nothing alike. Extended benefits is just a pool of money that they give twice a year, the amount of which is based on your level in the company. This pool of money can be used to buy gadgets, like new computers, PDAs, iPods, etc. or work out equipment or any of a huge list of things. While it may sound a bit strange from this explanation, it is really quite awesome.

5) New laptop! I got a sweet new 2GHz Core Duo laptop with 2GB of RAM and an Nvidia Quadro NVS 110m video card. <3

I haven’t actually started doing much yet seeing as my 3 days this week were all orientation stuff, but I’m excited to start on Monday with my actual job training. From what I’ve heard, it lasts 3 weeks, and then I get put on a project and start doing real work. SO EXCITED! I’m so pleased with this job, with this city, and with my life right now. I miss everyone back in Cleveland and I can’t wait to go back on the 29th to see them, but I am happy to call Chicago my new home.

opening pandora’s box

On this morning, I have made the greatest discovery in my recent forays onto the net. Not since learning about digg nearly a year ago have I found a site that will change the way I use my computer. That site, is Pandora.

Pandora has an extremely simple interface. All it is when you look at it for the first time is a small description and a flash object. Generally, I can’t stand flash interfaces, but here I can make an exception. You begin using Pandora by typing in the name of a band you like, or the name of a song you enjoy. Pandora then proceeds to create a streaming radio station based on your band or song choice. This radio station then begins to play, starting off with your selection, but then proceeding to play other similar bands and songs. You have the option to give each song a thumbs up or thumbs down in a very Tivo style voting system thereby fine tailoring the station to you.

I have already found a number of bands that I had never heard of yet I thoroughly enjoying! I have no doubt that given some more use, I will never run out of new and exciting music to listen to.

I think I found the apartment I want. It’s very cool. It’s small, and in not exactly the area I originally thought I wanted to be in, but it has all the amenities I wanted in an apartment. I’m so excited! The girl didn’t answer when I called not too long ago to tell her that I wanted the place, but it’s also pretty late. I’ll try calling early tomorrow and get it for sure, as well as go in and pay whatever I need to. Yay! There’s not a whole lot more to say. I wish there was cause I’m feeling really good about my decision. I just had to write something here. Besides, it’s been awhile since I last posted. I’ve been pretty busy.

Anyway… YAY!

Today I head back to Cleveland from Chicago. I’m excited to be back and hang out with everyone, but I’m a bit upset that I haven’t found a place yet in Chicago. I’m hopeful for when I come back on Monday, however. I feel that a ton more places will come up for October 1st once September gets underway. Even though I had wanted to find a place for September 1st, none of the places felt quite right. I’ll know it when I see it. For now, I’ll just go to Cleveland, start packing up my stuff, go to Steve’s bachelor party, and save worrying about finding a place for another day.
